Purchase options and add-ons
London’s suburbs. Latin America’s megacities. West Africa’s villages.
China’s skyscrapers. North America’s homes.
Addiction is a worldwide and at home epidemic.
A powerful look at the gospel for the addicted, Hope in Addiction helps us think about what it means to be the Church in light of this growing—and heartbreaking—epidemic.
How did we get here? And how can we find freedom from addiction? This book is not just about drug or alcohol abuse. It’s about gambling addictions, porn dependencies, workaholism, and internet addictions. It’s a book about how slaves to addiction become children of the Living God and family in the community of God. Wherever they are. Whatever has enslaved them.
With clarity and compassion, Andy Partington brings together personal stories, compelling research, and frontline ministry experience. This book is for Christian leaders, influencers, counselors, and educators. For the friends and family of those gripped by addiction. And, for those who themselves battle addiction. This book is for all of us.
There is hope in addiction. Hope for freedom. Hope for wholeness. Hope for eternity.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 March 2024"Hope in Addiction" offers a profound exploration of the human spirit amidst the struggles of addiction. Through personal anecdotes and professional insights, it navigates the complex terrain of addiction with empathy and wisdom.
I really loved the real life stories from all over the world - you can tell Andy has spent well researched time amongst those who minister in some of the hardest places. He delves into the depths of despair while illuminating pathways to redemption and recovery.
I've been on one of the Novo Adventures bike tours that supports Novo Communities that he started in South America and I can personally vouch for the real life impact that his team are having at a grass roots level in Bolivia and beyond.
Andy's approach is both compassionate and practical, due to years spent working with and for those struggling with addiction. This book offers a beacon of hope for those in their darkest moments. It also serves as a lifeline for those grappling with addiction, providing valuable tools and perspectives to embark on a journey towards healing and renewal. "Hope in Addiction" is a poignant testament to the hope that Jesus Christ still offers to those struggling with addiction in our world today.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 May 2023When I started reading this book I did not expect it to be such a deeply powerful experience. This is for anyone to with a heart to see the broken, downtrodden and battered set free.
The extent of of the addiction culture was an eye opener, yet despite the seriousness of the problem this book is not heavy or depressing and includes lots of stories and real life situations with sensitivity and insight.
Years of research and experience are consolidated into a compassionate and refreshingly easy read.
It is written from a Christian perspective, but is not preachy or judgmental. The journey to freedom we are invited to consider, is both breathtakingly simple and dramatically challenging.
It has the potential to be a game changer in our personal lives, church communities and the frontlines or wider communities we seek to serve.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 May 2023This is a brilliant book by Andy Partington. Written out own long experience of working in the field of drug rehabilitation it has a lively style which conveys expert knowledge easily. It moves smoothly from the global scene to individual stories and from the statistical to the personal. Full of empathy, it explores the deep causes of addiction and never shirks on realism. Yet it is full of hope, telling some stories of transformation, as well as pointing to some very practical ways forwards, not least for churches. It will inform those of us who are ignorant of the field, challenge those of us who are indifferent to it and inspire any who are already or who are thinking of being involved in an area of major social concern which destroys so many lives. Heartily recommended to all.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2025This is a truly extraordinary book.
Born out of a lifetime's experience, Hope in Addiction is the most helpful and insightful, real and compassionate book I’ve ever read on addiction. It is beautifully written, full of compelling insights written out of rich understanding and with great compassion. Andy Partington’s intelligent and honest way of dealing with the complexities of addiction is superb and deeply challenging. The way he engages with society, tells people’s stories and describes the church is both truthful, tragic and so inspiring.
The book is aimed at all of those of us who are part of the church and also the families and friends of those caught in addiction. I read this as a person whose family have grappled with the consequences of addiction for decades, but also as someone who works with many people caught in various addictive traps.
The chapter on ‘Rat Pack Church’ resonates deeply and confronts all of us with the invisible/‘acceptable’ ways we ‘comfort’ ourselves. It makes me want to be part of such a church as he advocates.
Everyone should read it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 May 2023Drugs and alcohol are not the only addictions. This book explains and debunks so many of our misunderstandings about addiction. And there is more than hope. There is true recovery, real restoration, and people and communities that can help. This book speaks of hope for the individual and also for all our communities wherever they are.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 May 2023Really well written, well researched and very insightful into the social problems and individual issues that lock people into serious addiction. and very helpful advice and ideas for individuals and churches working with those in addiction. Highly recommended for general public and for those working with addicts
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2023More a book for those involved in outreach than for addicts themselves. Once an Addict by Barry Woodward would be more suited for that.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 May 2024Andy writes in a clear and easy way to introduce the reader to the world of addiction. Making it clear that it is not just people on the margins impacted. It gives insight into the causes of addiction and why it is an issue that can affect anyone. The book does not leave the reader without a solution, however, and as the title suggests provides hope to the situation through practical advice and real life examples of how hope is being brought to people by Christians sharing God's hope through love, care and hard work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful! Easy to read.
A must read for all community and church leaders.
I love how Andy wove in real life stories and took us through the scientific side of addiction through the root causes to actual helpful solutions based in community and churches. He does a great job of including all the areas for successful recovery including the need for the spiritual side of recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book invites all of us to see that healing, wholeness, and hope are possible.
I have family and friends who struggle with addiction, and I myself understand the temptation to seek something external to meet the needs and ease the pain that we all experience in this life. Partington writes, "There is hope in addiction. Hope for freedom, restoration, a fresh start, and a different ending. Hope for now and hope for eternity." In one way or another, Hope in Addiction is truly a book for all of us.
